A day in nature can be the best reset to the week. When screens, homework, and outings have you feeling a bit drained, head out for a family recharge in this most-scenic and lesser-known trail in Sai Kung – The Tai Tan Country Trail.
The Tai Tan Country Trail is a mix of flat trails, moderate climbs, and secluded beaches for respite which can be completed within 2.5 hours (not including breaks). We recommend beginning at Tai Tan so that you can end your hike on Hoi Ha beach where you can splash around or grab a snack from the kiosks.
To begin, make your way to the Tai Tan bus stop on Pak Tam Road. From Sai Kung, you can take the 94 bus or the New Territories taxis.
The first section of the trail is an easy, mostly flat and shaded walk along the sea. Grab your cameras though, because you’ll be surrounded by picturesque views and stunning backdrops along every corner. After about 2.6km, you’ll cut through the first secluded beach which makes for a perfect spot to take a break, splash around if the weather permits and enjoy your packed snacks.
After the beach, begin the more challenging part of the hike which includes steeper climbing, big boulders, and walking inwards away from the coast. Sweat it out and you’ll be rewarded with more breathtaking views of crystal blue seas and Sharp Peak from higher vantage points.
You can take a quick break along a second secluded beach that’s a short detour away from the main trail, before continuing along. Follow signs towards Hoi Ha then end at Hoi Ha Wan Beach where shops and water sports rentals are available.
Make sure to pack snacks and water, then enjoy a day out through stunning coastal views surrounded by majestic mountains and forestry greens.
For more family-friendly outdoor adventures:
A perfect hike for nature-loving families with kids and teens who enjoy picturesque moments, beaches, and a moderate challenge.
Families with kids 7+ years, or anyone who enjoys an easy to moderately challenging hike with the most gorgeous views along the way.
Towards the tail end of the hike, you’ll also pass by the Hoi Ha Marine Life Center which is open between 10am-5pm from Thurs-Sunday and on PH (except Christmas and CNY). They provide educational services for visitors or you can book their glass-bottom boat and take a tour of the marine life.
